Getting Back to the Table: Part II

In “Part I” I provided some background on returning to the game. In “Part II” we’ll skip right past list creation and get to the important stuff — the toys!

After kicking five versions of a 750 point list up to various forums, and learning that nobody can agree on a list, I’ve decided to skip right past that step and get to painting the things I already know I need.

Since I have decided to play a Black Templar army I know that I’ll need an Emperor’s Champion regardless of what other HQ choices I might need. That made him the logical first step in seeing what could be done with the GW plastic pieces. Remember that my goal is to create an interesting, dynamic and characterful army using only unmodified GW plastics.

For the Emperor’s Champion I have used:

  • Assault Marine legs for the running motion
  • Champion torso & pauldron from the Command Squad sprue
  • Laurel from the accessory sprue
  • BT head
  • BT icon pauldron
  • BT bolt pistol and power sword
  • BT backpack
  • Lots and lots of BT accessory items (including 12 crusader/purity seals)
  • Cork basing

I decided not to put the sword up in the classic Champion position — but to angle it downward in a position more in keeping with his running motion. The pistol is also up to reflect the natural running motion and help balance the angle of his body.

I plan on doing a small mural on the tabard which is why I’ve left it a chalky white. The rest of the painting I’m trying not to spend too much time on so that I can actually get this army on to a table eventually.

With all of that said I present you with the first piece of my army: The Emperor’s Champion
